Cat peeing outside the litter box: why she does it and how to stop it

Her body first, then the box, then the spot she keeps going back to.

A sudden change is a vet visit first: pain or a urinary problem can make a cat avoid the box.

The fix in 20 seconds

  • A sudden change is a vet visit first: pain or a urinary problem can make a cat avoid the box.
  • Once she gets the all-clear, check the box: dirty, scented litter, too few boxes, the wrong spot or the wrong box.
  • Then soak the spot with an enzyme cleaner so she has no reason to go back.

The fix in 5 steps

  1. Blot up what you can

    Don't rub it in.

  2. Smell still there after two rounds?

Switch to a non-enzyme cleaner like Skout's Honor Cat.

She's not being spiteful. A cat who pees outside the box is telling you something about her body or her box. Check both, in that order.

Clean the spot so she doesn't go back

Cats go back to a spot they can still smell, long after you can't. Skip ammonia cleaners: to a cat, ammonia smells like pee.

  1. Blot up what you can. Don't rub it in.
  2. Soak the spot with an enzyme cleaner as deep as the pee went. Wait 15 minutes, then blot.
  3. Let it dry fully before you judge the smell.
  4. Smell still there after two rounds? Switch to a non-enzyme cleaner like Skout's Honor Cat.
  5. Until she's back in the box, put her food bowl or a spare box on the spot. Cats don't like to pee where they eat.

Start with her body

Out of nowhere, small amounts often, straining, or blood in the urine? Book the vet before you change anything else. A male cat straining with little or nothing coming out is an emergency.

Then check the box: 5 common causes

Read this sectionHide this section
  • It's dirty. Cats skip a box that smells used. Scoop every day and swap all the litter about once a month.
  • The litter is scented. Plenty of cats dislike perfumed litter. Switch to unscented, and mix it into the old litter over a week.
  • Too few boxes. The usual rule is one box per cat, plus one. Two cats, three boxes, and one on each floor.
  • Wrong spot. Boxes next to a loud washer, in a busy hallway or beside the food bowl get skipped. Pick a quiet corner she can reach easily, with a clear way out.
  • Wrong box. A covered box holds smell in, a high side is hard on an older cat, and a small box is cramped. Try a large, open box with a low entry.

Clean, unscented, one more box than cats, somewhere quiet. Fix those before you buy anything else.

The picks

Her body first. Then a clean, unscented box in a quiet spot. Then an enzyme soak so the spot stops calling her back.

Questions people ask

Is my cat peeing outside the box out of spite?

No. Cats don't pee to get back at you. Something changed in her body, her box or her home. Find it and fix that.

Why does my cat pee right next to the litter box?

Usually the box: it's dirty, the litter is scented, it's too small, or she doesn't like the cover. Scoop, go unscented and try a bigger open box.

Can stress make a cat pee outside the box?

Yes. A move, a new pet, a new baby or a fight with another cat can do it. Add a box in a quiet room and keep her routine steady.
