Wrong litter and your cat votes with the rug. Three questions settle the type in under a minute. Then match your cat to a pick.

Is bag weight, dust or flushing your main fight?Plant-based: corn for a lighter bag, wood for low dust, tofu to flush where allowedClumping clay does the job

Not sure on question 2? Start unscented. ASPCA says most cats prefer clumping, unscented litter with a soft, sandy texture. The Ohio State Indoor Pet Initiative says research shows most cats prefer fine-grained, unscented litters.

Which litter type fits

Clumping clay

Forms a clump you lift out whole. Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra is unscented clumping clay. Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal mixes baking soda into clumping clay and carries a light scent. Pour clay low to keep the dust down.

Plant-based clumping: corn, wood, tofu

All four clump.

  • World's Best Comfort Care is whole-kernel corn with no added fragrance.
  • ökocat is wood fiber. ökocat says it is biodegradable and 99% dust free, with no artificial fragrance.
  • Lady N is tofu. Lady N calls it biodegradable.
  • FUKUMARU pellets are soybean pulp and corn starch, water-soluble and flushable where plumbing allows.

Non-clumping

Soaks pee into the whole tray until you change it all. It is the vet-ordered route: kittens, litter eaters, a cat that refuses clumps. Start with your vet, then read clumping vs non-clumping.

Crystal (silica)

Crystal litter absorbs instead of clumping, so there are no whole clumps to lift. Want scoopable? Start with Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra.

Switch without a protest

ASPCA advises against changing litter types when your cat has no box trouble. If you must switch, mix a small amount of the new litter into the old every few days. If your cat starts going beside the box, call your vet.

Questions people ask

Which cat litter is best for a kitten?

ASPCA says to use litter marked as safe for kittens for cats under six months. Ask your vet which type and when to switch.

How deep should cat litter be?

ASPCA says most cats prefer only one to two inches. Ohio State's Indoor Pet Initiative says about 2 inches. Follow the bag if the maker names a different depth.

Can I flush cat litter?

Only where local rules allow it, and only litter sold as flushable, like FUKUMARU. The Dr. Elsey's directions say do not flush. When in doubt, bag it and bin it. Want flushable? See FUKUMARU Tofu.

Which cat litter is best for most cats?
