You cleaned it. Twice. Three times. The carpet looks fine, and the room still smells like pee every time the heat kicks on. That smell isn't coming from the fibers anymore. The pee soaked past them, into the pad, the wood or concrete under it, or the foam inside a couch cushion, where nothing poured on top can reach.
First time on this spot? Start with the carpet guide. This page is for when three full enzyme rounds didn't do it.

Fastest fix: pad and subfloor
- Confirm it's deep. Three full enzyme rounds, the spot is fully dry, and the smell is still there. Scan with a UV flashlight in the dark to see how far the glow spreads.
- Pull back the carpet. Lift it off the tack strip at the nearest wall and roll it back past the spot.
- Cut out the stained pad with a utility knife, a hand's width past the stain. Stained across the room? Replace the whole pad.
- Soak the subfloor with Rocco & Roxie Professional Strength. Its directions cover wood and concrete, so it goes where the smell lives. Wet the whole stain, cover it with plastic, and leave it overnight.
- Dry it completely. Fans and a dehumidifier, then the sniff test once it's dry.
- Still smells from the bare floor? Ask a flooring pro about sealing the subfloor before new pad goes in.
- Lay new pad, stretch the carpet back, then treat the carpet surface like a fresh spot (steps 3 to 5 of the carpet guide).
Fastest fix: pee on the couch
- Fresh accident? Blot hard first. Press towels into the cushion with your full weight until they come up dry.
- Test a hidden spot first, on the back or underside of the cushion, because fabrics react differently.
- Unzip the cover if it comes off. Check its care tag, then treat the foam and the cover separately.
- Soak the foam with an enzyme cleaner made for upholstery. Naturally It's Clean is made for carpet and upholstery. Use enough to reach the foam and give it the label's sit time.
- Dry the cushion with a fan, standing on its edge so air reaches both sides.
- Cover it. A washable waterproof blanket like the Ameritex Waterproof Dog Bed Blanket takes the next accident instead of the foam, and washing a blanket beats scrubbing a cushion.

Why the smell hides down there
Read this sectionHide this section
The pad. It holds pee like a sponge. Cleaning the fibers is half the job if the pad underneath is still wet with old pee.
The subfloor. A spot hit again and again for months can soak through the pad into the wood or concrete. No amount of cleaner poured on top reaches it.
Cushion foam. Same story as the pad, softer target: it soaks pee up and holds it.
Wicking. As the pad dries, moisture rises and brings residue with it, so a spot can look worse for a day. That usually settles once it's fully dry. Back after that? Go another round.
Want the chemistry? Here is why your carpet still smells like dog pee.
Repair or replace?
Replace the pad section the pee soaked, and treat the subfloor if it got that far. Replacing the whole carpet makes sense when it's old and worn anyway, or the same patch was soaked for months. Call a pro when several rooms are hit, the whole house smells, or you're getting ready to sell.
Then block the spot (a chair, a gate, a closed door) until the smell is gone for good. Dogs go back to spots they can smell, even when you can't.
